If you're searching for a top-tier manual espresso grinder, the Timemore Millab M01 is Timemore's answer — and their first serious foray into the luxury segment with their Millab sub-brand. This professional grinder brings a genuine innovation to the table: patented 44mm pineapple conical burrs that promise grinding uniformity beyond what traditional conical burrs can achieve.

The Timemore Millab M01 marks a real strategic shift for the Chinese brand. Think of Millab as Timemore's Lexus — a premium sub-brand aimed squarely at the high end of the manual grinder market. The pitch is compelling: a distinctive aluminum design, patented pineapple burrs, and meticulous build quality. But does this specialty coffee grinder actually live up to its promises? Here's what I found after several weeks of daily use.

Unboxing and First Impressions

The moment you open the box, it's clear that Timemore sweated every detail of the Millab M01 packaging. The grinder sits snugly in high-density foam that has the oddly satisfying feel of memory foam — custom-molded to the grinder's exact shape. Every piece has its own dedicated compartment: the grinder body, the catch cup, the spare burrs, and accessories all nestle perfectly in place. It's the kind of unboxing experience that reinforces the premium price tag.

Here's what the box contains:

  • The Millab M01 grinder
  • A Millab cleaning brush (aluminum handle)
  • A collectible commemorative token
  • The user manual and warranty card

Introducing the Timemore Millab M01: an imposing manual grinder

The Timemore Millab M01 makes an impression the moment you pick it up. At 1.1 kg, it's one of the heaviest manual grinders on the market — noticeably larger than the Comandante C40 or the 1Zpresso J-Ultra.

Premium construction: aluminum and stainless steel

The body of the Millab M01 grinder is made of aerospace-grade aluminum combined with stainless steel. Unlike some competing manual coffee grinders, very little plastic is used. The anodized finish is impeccable and the textured surface provides excellent grip that prevents any slipping during grinding.

My choice: the model with wood finish

I went for the wood finish model — I found it more elegant and distinctive. My initial worry was that the grinder might slip during use, especially when grinding for espresso, where the torque really builds up.

Those worries turned out to be completely unfounded. Even at espresso grind settings, the M01 stays firmly planted. The combination of its weight and the wood surface provides a solid grip. A big plus for Timemore.

tip

On the silver aluminum model, grooves have been machined across the entire body of the grinder, providing better grip during use.

The pineapple burrs: the M01's main innovation

The centrepiece of the Timemore Millab M01 is its patented 44mm conical burr, nicknamed the pineapple burr for its distinctive textured pattern. It's a radical departure from conventional burr designs, and the defining feature of this grinder.

An extended grinding path for optimal quality

Unlike conventional conical burrs, the M01's pineapple burrs include two pre-grinding stages rather than one. The result is a considerably extended grinding path: despite measuring just 44mm across, this burr delivers a grinding track comparable in length to a 64mm flat burr.

This design aims to marry the best of both worlds: the uniformity of flat burrs with the ease of use and lower torque of conicals. It's an ambitious goal for a versatile grinder that can handle both espresso and pour-over. We'll see how that holds up in the cup further on.

Grinding ease and surprising speed

Day to day, the M01 is a strong performer. Speed-wise, it keeps pace with 48mm conical grinders like the Kingrinder K7 or the 1Zpresso J-Ultra.

The real surprise is how little effort it takes: despite matching 48mm grinders on speed, the resistance is noticeably lower. I couldn't put an exact number on it, but the difference is unmistakable from the first grind. The pineapple burrs explain this: beans are crushed in a first stage before being finely ground, which significantly reduces the force required compared to traditional conical burrs. You feel the benefit immediately.

Here are the grinding times measured for 18g of coffee:

Brewing methodGrinder settingEstimated time for 18 g
Espresso0.9 (9 clicks)~40 s
Pour-over (filter)8.0 (80 clicks)~20 s

These times confirm the excellent performance of the M01, particularly for gentle methods where the coarser grind allows for remarkable speed.

Ultra-precise adjustment system: 100 micro-clicks of 12.5 microns

The Millab M01 uses a micrometric dual-bearing adjustment system with a click dial. In total, 100 micro-clicks are available, each adjusting the burr gap by only 12.5 microns. This exceptional precision allows for fine-tuning the espresso grind or for gentle methods.

  • French Press80 to 100 clicks
    0100

These settings are indicative and may vary depending on your coffee and preferences.

The system adjusts by numbered graduations from 0 to 10, with 10 subdivisions between each number. For espresso, settings are between 0 and 1.5, while pour-over methods are positioned between 5.0 and 10.0.

A very satisfying adjustment dial

I particularly appreciated how well-defined the clicks are when rotating the adjustment ring — more tactile than on the Chestnut S3. Every micro-step is crisp and decisive.

Another detail I loved: the hopper stays put when you adjust the dial. On some grinders, rotating the ring lifts the entire top section, which looks awkward. Here, the form stays seamless throughout. A clever design call from Timemore.

For me, the top of the grinder is a dead ringer for a Leica M lens hood: a clean, premium design that radiates quality. The resemblance is no coincidence, and it's a key part of the M01's high-end identity.

tip

Practical tip: the adjustment system also acts as a funnel, allowing you to pour coffee beans very easily into the grinder without risk of overflow.

The click-lock catch cup

Timemore went with a clever catch cup attachment: a click-lock mechanism that combines the security of a threaded system with the speed of a bayonet mount. A simple eighth of a turn is all it takes to detach or reattach.

The attachment is solid, fast, and secure — the cup isn't going anywhere, even when you're cranking hard. It's a genuinely well-considered feature that makes the daily routine noticeably smoother.

The catch cup also has a beveled rim that makes pouring clean, and its silicone base keeps it firmly on the countertop. Thoughtful details throughout.

The handle: comfortable and elegant grip

The M01's handle is fixed and non-retractable, unlike the Chestnut S3 or C3 ESP Pro. It detaches easily via the attachment system, though pulling it off sometimes takes a bit of effort due to a very snug fit.

A comfortable and elegant handle

The wooden handle is a lovely piece of work and adds real warmth to the grinder. It's slightly chunkier than on other Timemore grinders, which translates into a genuinely comfortable grip.

My only mild disappointment is that it's not retractable like on Timemore's Pro-range models — though that's entirely expected: this grinder was never meant for travel.

Grinding performance: exceptional quality for espresso and filter

Remarkable grind uniformity

This is where the M01 truly earns its price tag. Particle size distribution measurements reveal exceptional uniformity for a conical grinder — a grind profile that looks more like a well-engineered flat burr than a traditional conical.

Fines production is remarkably low, yielding clean, balanced espresso extractions — and crucially, it lets you push extraction further without tipping into bitterness.

About particle size distribution measurements

The graph below presents the manufacturer data provided by Timemore, measured using a professional refractometer. These measurements allow visualizing the remarkable uniformity of the grind produced by the M01's pineapple burrs.

Espresso Performance

The results in the cup are genuinely impressive. Across a range of medium-roasted coffees, the M01 produces espresso extractions of exceptional clarity with a syrupy body. Since the grinder leans toward pour-over territory, it brings a subtle brightness to espresso that lifts the aromas without ever becoming aggressive. That acidity is well-balanced and well-integrated — it never overpowers the other notes. The overall grind profile prioritizes clarity and concentration over the sweetness and body you'd typically get from classic conical burrs.

Having tested a lot of grinders for this blog and personally, this is the first time in a long time that a grinder has genuinely surprised me. The pineapple burr that Timemore has developed here hasn't got nearly the attention it deserves yet.

By applying all the principles to avoid channeling, you will discover in the video below how this grinder extracts 18g of coffee.

And the result in the cup:

Millab M01 for espresso
4.9/5
Although initially designed for filter methods, the M01 grinder and its innovative pineapple burrs truly impress in espresso by delivering extractions of exceptional clarity, combining a syrupy body with delicately controlled acidity that enhances the aromas.

Performance for filter methods (V60, Chemex, French Press)

Filter brewing is where the Millab M01 really comes into its own. Built with pour-over in mind, it delivers exceptional aromatic clarity with the V60, Chemex, and any other filter method you throw at it.

The uniform grind from the pineapple burrs translates directly into complex, low-bitterness cups. Compared to the 1Zpresso K-Ultra, the M01 lets you push extraction further while keeping the finish clean and pleasant.

Brightness-wise it sits between the K-Ultra and the ZP6 — moderate and well-controlled. An outstanding filter grinder that's particularly adept at teasing out the nuances of specialty beans.

5/5
Specially designed for filter methods, the Millab M01 relies on its pineapple burrs to deliver a perfectly uniform grind, thus revealing all the complexity and nuances of specialty coffee with exceptional clarity and reduced bitterness.

Maintenance and Disassembly

Cleaning the M01 is tool-free and straightforward. Remove the adjustment dial to access the upper burr, give it a brush, and reassemble. Simple and quick.

warning

As with all coffee grinders, absolutely avoid water during cleaning. A soft brush is more than sufficient.

Conclusion: the Timemore Millab M01, a Justified Premium Investment
